Description

Remarkable level of attenuation provided by the smoke reaching out to Long Island, NY and turning late afternoon into one special solar observation experience:-) Single exposure with the hand-held camera (f=9.8mm (50mm in 35mm eq.), 1/160s, f/8, ISO 80). Colors and tone are preserved close to the perception while viewing the scene with naked eye.

As far as I can recall the smoke coverage of this intensity happens for the first time on Eastern Long Island since 2012, and it looks like the end of the week is going to be even more special according to the Clear Sky Chart service forecast summary ((C) Attilla Danko) for Montauk Point, NY [1]:

Given below is also the overview for the current smoke fire productions spread out over North America taken from [2]:

Too bad there isn't some large sunspot on the disk of the Sun at the moment, otherwise it may have been visible even through this severe attenuation by smoke layer. The recent continuum image taken from [3] is shown below - the sunspots shown there weren't large enough to get through, at least in today's conditions and with the camera used.
